Service and Parts
Your lawnmower only runs as well as you take care of it, which is why it’s vitally important that you maintain it, even in the middle of the summer. John Deere mowers are renowned for their power, performance, and longevity, but there are still important steps you need to take for optimal performance.
Here are the most common mower maintenance tasks to take, as well as a few attachments that will help you improve performance and get the most out of your machine.
Common Mower Maintenance Tasks
Your mower should always be kept in top condition to minimize the risk of downtime, especially during the peak summer mowing season. Here are some common maintenance tasks that you can do at home.
Check Your Engine
It should be obvious, but your engine should be monitored regularly to ensure top performance. Engine maintenance can consist of many things, but the most important components to check are engine oil levels, oil filters, air filters, your battery, and spark plugs. If all of these components are working properly, then your mower will function as it should. It’s best to keep a few extra maintenance parts in stock in case something comes up, like low oil levels or a dirty filter. John Deere supplies a great selection of maintenance kits to make it easy to always have what you need when something breaks down.
Blade Maintenance
Are your blades in good condition? Do you notice uneven cuts, or are you having to make multiple passes to trim your grass down? It might be time to replace your mower blades. Mower blades wear down over time and aren’t as sharp as when you first purchased your lawn mower. They can also get chips in them from hitting the occasional hard object, like a tree root or rocks. It’s a good idea to check your blades every season. If you can sharpen them on your own, you can save some extra cash. But if you can’t sharpen your blades yourself, we carry a great selection of mower blades for every John Deere lawn mower model.
Deck Cleaning
With continuous use, your mower deck accumulates a lot of junk, from grass clippings to dirt and mud. All of that junk gets trapped under your mower deck and can gunk up your blades as well, reducing the efficiency of your mower blades. So if it isn’t your blades’ sharpness, it could be a mower deck causing uneven cuts on your lawn. Make sure to keep your deck clean by spraying it off with a water hose after normal use and keeping it free of wet grass clippings and other debris.
Deck Height Adjustment
When was the last time you adjusted your mower deck height? Typically, adjusting your mower deck height is a one-and-done decision; set it to the height that you prefer, and leave it alone. However, sometimes you need to adjust your deck height, especially if you’re a contract mower with many different clients. Everyone has their grass height preferences, and what works for one yard may not work for another.
Attachments for Better Mowing
Mowing performance isn’t just based on proper maintenance; you also need the proper tools to perform the best that you can. Here are some common mower attachments that can improve your mowing capabilities and provide a more efficient cut.
Mulching Kit
Mowing grass can be a messy job, especially if you’re using a mower with a side discharge and blowing grass clippings everywhere. These grass clippings will clump up in your yard and can provide an unsightly look to an otherwise pristine cut. A mulching kit upgrade for your mower provides specific mulching blades and discharge blockers that reduce your grass clippings to fine pieces. Mulching is great for returning nutrients to yards and can provide an alternative to typical side-discharge mowing operations.
Bagging Kit
Want to step up your mowing game to an even cleaner appearance? Try a bagging kit! Bagging upgrades for John Deere mowers help you to collect all grass clippings, not just mulch them into tinier pieces, and store them in a bag on the rear of your mower. The bag can then be dumped after you're finished mowing, moving all grass clippings off the lawn and giving it a clean and professional look. Check online to see which bagging kits work with your specific lawn tractor, front mower, or zero-turn mower.
