Winter Lawn Care Tips: What Really Works?
4:19

Spring is all about the growth of your lawn; new beginnings, a fresh start, and many opportunities to make your lawn really shine. Winter, on the other hand, is a dead month for your lawn – quite literally! Grass is dormant, and little to no growth happens during this period.

However, while it might seem like there’s nothing to do to prepare your lawn for the cold months, there’s actually a lot you can do to ensure a beautiful spring growth.

Let’s examine some winter lawn care tips and try to separate fact from fiction to help you understand what really works.

Prepare for Winter

If you haven’t already prepared for old man winter, that should be the first thing on the list to tackle. The first thing to do is mow your lawn low. For your final mow of the season, cut the grass shorter than usual - about 2 to 2.5 inches high. This helps prevent snow mold and allows better air circulation to the soil. However, don’t cut it too short; this can stress the grass out (like visiting the in-laws for Christmas)!

Next, you need to aerate your grass. Aerating your lawn in late fall allows oxygen, water, and nutrients to penetrate deep into the soil. Follow this with winter fertilizer, which provides essential nutrients that grass roots can store and use throughout the cold months.

Finally, remove fallen leaves, branches, and other debris from your lawn before winter. Leaving these on your grass can lead to grass suffocation, mold growth, and diseases like snow mold.

Winter Lawn Maintenance

Now that you’ve prepared and winter has arrived, here are some essential tips for maintaining your lawn in the colder months.

The first and simplest maintenance tip is to avoid walking on frozen or frost-covered grass, which can damage the blades and lead to dead patches in spring. If necessary, create designated paths using stepping stones or mulch.

Next, when you get snow and ice, remove it carefully from your lawn. Gently clear heavy snow from your lawn to prevent compression and damage, and if ice forms, carefully break it up to prevent the grass from suffocating. If you don’t already own one, a snow shovel or a snow blower are essential tools for snow and ice removal. If you have a compact utility tractor and need to remove snow from large areas, you can invest in snow removal attachments like a front blade or snow blower. The Frontier 366 Front Blade is a wide, 66-inch blade perfectly designed to handle many tasks, from spreading gravel or dirt to plowing snow piles.

Even when it’s cold, you still need to ensure your lawn is properly watered. In areas with little snow, occasional winter watering may be necessary. Make sure you water on warmer days when temperatures are above freezing to prevent ice formation.

Prepare for Spring

So, you’ve prepared for winter and maintained your lawn – what’s next? Spring! The arrival of spring is when you witness whether your hard work in the fall and winter paid off.

Winter is an excellent time to conduct a soil test. Even if you’ve never done one, it’s a great time to get a base reading of your soil composition. This will help you understand your soil’s nutrient needs and pH levels, allowing you to plan your spring fertilization strategy effectively.

If your lawn has thin or bare patches, plan to overseed in early spring. Research and choose the grass types that are well-suited to your climate and lawn conditions. Some common types of lawn grass that are hardy in all weather conditions and climate zones are Kentucky Bluegrass, Fescue, Zoysia, and Perennial Ryegrass.
