Why Mid-Summer Might be the Best Time for Equipment Service
3:48

When you’re a farmer or property owner, costly repairs will inevitably come up. Although most equipment owners choose to have servicing done in the off-season, when work isn’t as demanding, it’s sometimes an advantage to have servicing done at other points in the year, such as mid-summer. Aside from that, you sometimes can’t pick when servicing needs to be completed, especially when it’s an emergency!

That’s why it’s always important to have a well-thought-out game plan for tackling servicing, whether it’s the middle of winter or the middle of summer.

Here’s why mid-summer might be the best time for equipment service.

Why Service Equipment?

Regular equipment maintenance is important for successful farming. Well-maintained machinery operates far more efficiently, consumes less fuel, and delivers consistent performance when you need it most.

Additionally, preventive servicing catches small problems before they become expensive failures that can sideline your equipment during critical planting or harvest times. Beyond avoiding costly breakdowns, proper maintenance also extends equipment life, maintains warranty coverage, and makes sure your machines retain their resale value. Even a single day of downtime during harvest can cost thousands in lost productivity, which makes the investment in regular servicing pay for itself!

Is Mid-Summer a Good Time?

Mid-summer has both challenges and opportunities for equipment servicing. While it's true that this is peak season when machines are working hardest and downtime is costly, there are a few good reasons to consider summer maintenance.

The warm, dry weather may be beneficial since it creates ideal working conditions for technicians, allowing them to work like they normally would without battling cold, wet, or icy conditions. Most equipment problems tend to reveal themselves under actual working conditions, giving you the chance to make repairs as they’re happening without waiting for them to get worse. Service shops are typically fully staffed and operating at peak capacity during summer as well, with all specialty tools and parts readily available. Taking care of maintenance mid-season can prevent larger, costly failures during the even more important harvest period. Also, the extended daylight hours mean more time to complete the necessary work for technicians.

Top Maintenance Tasks to Complete on Your Equipment

You should focus your mid-summer servicing on the maintenance tasks that can directly affect your machines’ performance and reliability.

Hydraulic system service should be your top priority. You should change filters, check fluid levels, and inspect hoses for wear or leaks, as hydraulic failures can shut down operations instantly.

Engine maintenance comes next: replace air filters that may be clogged with dust and debris, check coolant levels and system pressure, and ensure your oil is at the proper levels for hot weather operation.

Don't overlook your combine's cleaning system if harvest is approaching! Inspect and adjust fan speeds, replace worn sieves, and calibrate settings for better grain separation.

Finally, take time to lubricate all grease points, tighten bolts that may have loosened from vibration, and replace any worn belts or chains before they fail in the field.
