With spring approaching, it’s time to get some essential lawn care maintenance done. One of the most crucial steps in spring mower prep is sharpening lawn mower blades. Dull blades can lead to an uneven cut, and potential grass diseases. Whether you’re working with a John Deere, Kubota, or another brand, here are some essential tips for getting your mower spring-ready.
Why You Should Sharpen Your Mower Blades
A sharp blade will provide a clean cut, helping your lawn to heal faster, grow healthier, and prevent disease. Dull blades create jagged, uneven cuts that lead to browning and unhealthy growth. Sharpening your lawn mower blades will also ensure optimal engine performance and minimal strain.
Tools You'll Need
Before you get started, you’ll need some tools:
- A wrench or socket to remove the blade
- A bench grinder, metal file, or hand grinder
- A blade balancer
- Safety gloves and protective eyewear
Steps to Sharpen Your Lawn Mower Blades
- Disconnect the Power: For gas powered mowers, remove the spark plug to prevent accidental starts. For electric mowers, unplug the power source.
- Remove the Blade: Use your wrench or socket to loosen the bolt securing the blade in place. Mark one side of the blade clearly so you can reinstall it correctly.
- Clean the Blade: Before sharpening, remove any debris, grass buildup, or rust.
- Sharpen the Blade: Use your sharpening tool of choice. Follow the existing angle of the blade’s edge. When filing, be sure to only file it one direction, away from your body. Once your blade edge is looking nice and sharp again, grind or file one smooth stroke across the backside of the blade to remove any burs. Tip: Keep a count of how many passes you make while grinding the first side, and try to replicate it on the second side to maintain a good blade balance.
- Balance the Blade: After sharpening your mower blade, check for balance by placing it on a blade balancer. If your blade is unevenly balanced, use your file to even out the weight distribution. An unbalanced blade will cause vibration and uneven cutting.
- Reinstall the Blade: Secure the blade back onto the mower, using your mark to ensure that it is positioned correctly.
- Test Your Mower: Once reassembled, start the mower to check for smooth operation.
How Often Should You Sharpen Your Blades?
For most homeowners, sharpening your blades once or twice a season is sufficient. If you mow frequently, have a large lawn, or encounter rocky terrain, you may need to sharpen them more often.
