When your new compact tractor arrives at your property, the first thing you might want to do is hop in the driver’s seat and take it for a spin. But if you’re a first-time tractor owner, you might have some questions about how to get it moving. The good news is John Deere compact tractors were designed to be user-friendly, making them less complicated than you might think. To help you get comfortable behind the wheel, Koenig Equipment has put together a step-by-step guide on the basics of driving and operating your compact tractor, so you can confidently maneuver your property like a pro.
The first step to driving your compact tractor is as simple as getting in the seat and making yourself comfortable. Before you get going, adjust your seat as needed and take a moment to get familiar with the controls. Your tractor is equipped with various gauges and levers that allow you to monitor performance and operate the machine efficiently. You can use your operator’s manual to understand each component better. Your operator’s manual can provide more detailed information on each component, but for now, focus on the essentials: the range selector or gear stick and hitch control on your right, the throttle control to the right of the steering wheel, and the parking brake on your left.
Once you’re familiar with your controls set your gear in neutral range before starting your tractor.
Turn your key to the first notch to power on your engine and let it warm up for a minute. While the engine is warming up, lower the throttle, and once it’s ready, turn your key to the last position to start your engine!
Now for the fun part! Once your engine is running, release the parking brake and you're ready to go. If you’re using a hydrostatic tractor, you can use the Twin Touch pedals on your right for forward and reverse navigation. It’s as simple as driving a car. For manual transmission models such as the 3D series, slowly release your foot from the clutch, take your foot off the brake, and the tractor will move on its own.
You don’t want to go full speed as soon as you start your tractor. It’s important to go slow once you pull off and gradually increase your speed. Remember tractors were created for work not speed.
When you are finished using your tractor, you can stop it by taking your foot off the pedal, switching your gear back to neutral, and setting your parking brake. For manual transmissions, stop the tractor by pressing your foot on the clutch completely, setting your gear to neutral, and then setting the parking brake.
