How long an EGO Power+ battery lasts depends less on the calendar and more on how you charge it, where you store it, and how hard you run it. There is no single number we can promise. A battery that sits on a hot garage shelf all summer will not last as long as one kept cool and stored at a partial charge. Yes, you can leave an EGO battery on the charger, because the charger stops once the pack is full, but pulling it off is still easier on the cells. When a battery is not in use, store it in a cool, dry spot at roughly 30% to 50% charge. Below are the charging, storage and use habits that stretch battery life, plus the signs that tell you it is time to replace one.

How Long Do EGO Batteries Last?

EGO Power+ batteries are lithium-ion, and lithium-ion packs wear out two ways: through charge cycles and through heat. Every full charge and discharge uses up a little of the battery's capacity, and heat speeds that wear up. A pack that mows a typical Indiana or Ohio yard once a week, cools down before it goes back on the charger, and spends winter indoors will outlast one that is run flat every time and left in a shed through July and January.

Can You Leave EGO Batteries on the Charger?

You can. EGO Power+ chargers stop charging once the battery is full, so an overnight charge will not cook the pack. That said, how you charge still matters for the long haul:

• Use the right charger: Always use the charger that came with your EGO Power+ tool or a compatible EGO charger. An incorrect charger can damage the battery and shorten its life. 
• Avoid overcharging: The charger shuts off on its own, but taking the battery off once it is full is still good practice. Weeks on the charger adds stress the battery does not need.
• Charge at room temperature: Charge in a cool, dry place between 50°F and 86°F (10°C to 30°C). Do not charge in direct sunlight or in freezing conditions. 
• Partial charging is fine: Lithium-ion batteries have no "memory effect," so topping off a half-used pack is fine. Frequent partial charges are easier on the battery than running it empty every time. 

How to Store EGO Batteries When Not in Use

Storage is where most batteries lose life, especially over winter. Here is how to put them away:

• Store in a cool, dry place: Heat and cold both degrade capacity over time. Keep batteries out of direct sunlight and away from moisture, ideally between 50°F and 77°F (10°C to 25°C). A basement or closet beats an unheated shed.
• Partially charge before storage: If a battery will sit for more than a month, store it at 30% to 50% charge. Storing it full or empty shortens its life.
• Check it every few months: A battery in long-term storage should be checked and topped back up to that partial charge every three to six months. 

Habits That Protect the Battery While You Work

How you run the tool affects the battery, too: 

• Do not overload the tool: Pushing a trimmer or mower past what it is built for drains the battery faster and can damage it. Use the right tool for the job. 
• Let a hot battery cool: A warm pack after a long session is normal. Charging it while it is hot is not. Let it cool before it goes on the charger. 
• Keep the terminals clean: Dirt and grass on the battery and tool contacts hurt performance. Wipe them with a dry cloth. 

When to Replace Your EGO Power+ Battery

Even with good care, every battery eventually wears out. Watch for these signs:

• Reduced run time: If a full charge no longer finishes the job it used to, the pack is nearing the end of its useful life. 
• Difficulty charging: A battery that takes much longer to charge, or will not charge at all, is ready for replacement. 
• Physical damage: Cracks, swelling or any other damage mean stop using it immediately and replace it. 

One honest note: a battery with shorter run time is not necessarily done. If it still charges and holds enough for a smaller job, keep it as a backup and buy a fresh pack for the main work. A damaged or swollen battery is the exception. That one goes out of service, no matter how much life it seems to have left.
