How Long Do Lawn Mowers Last? The Short Answer

Mower life is measured in hours, not years. A well-maintained John Deere residential mower is built to last around 1,000 to 1,500 hours, which for a typical homeowner works out to about 10 years of use with good care. Lower-quality residential mowers tend to give out around 450 to 500 hours. Commercial mowers run longer: 1,200 to 1,500 hours for a lower-end machine and 2,000 to 2,500 hours for a John Deere commercial mower.

How you use and maintain the mower matters more than the name on the hood. Below we cover what wears out first, when a repair is worth the money, and how to get the most hours out of the machine you already own. A cheaper mower is a smaller check up front, but it rarely holds up as long.

What is the typical lifespan of a lawn mower and what can affect it?

Mower lifespans cannot be measured in an exact number of years, instead, they are measured in hours. A mower used two hours a week during the growing season is going to last longer than a mower used 15 hours a week.

The hours a lawn mower will last vary based on the size of the mower, the manufacturer, proper usage and maintenance, and more. Still, reasonable estimates can be made based on the brand, size, average usage, and care of the mower.

How long will a residential lawn mower last?

The average residential mower is used for 1-2 hours per mow with 35 cuts per year. Based on that usage, a lower-quality line of residential mowers is expected to last 450-500 hours, while a John Deere residential lawn mower will last around 1,000-1,500 hours. Those estimates assume proper care and regular maintenance. Mowing extra thick grass with twigs can quickly cut down your mower’s lifespan.

How long will a commercial lawn mower last?

For commercial mowers that are made to mow more often and for longer periods of time, the hours of life expectancy increase. A lower-end commercial mower will last around 1,200-1,500 hours, while a John Deere commercial mower is built to last for 2,000-2,500 hours.

How many hours on a mower is a lot?

Judge the hour meter against the machine’s range, not against a single number. A few hundred hours is most of the life of a lower-quality residential mower, but well under half the life of a John Deere residential mower. A commercial mower approaching 2,000 hours is nearing the top of its expected range. If the mower has been serviced on schedule, the higher end of each range is realistic; if it has been neglected, plan on the lower end.

What is the lifespan of various lawn mower parts?

While your lawn mower may have thousands of hours to give you, some of the key parts aren’t going to last as long as the mower itself. Part of getting the most out of your lawn mower means routinely caring for and replacing some key parts.

Lawn Mower Blade Lifespan

Sharp blades cut through the grass easier and require less work from the engine. Regularly sharpening your blades extends the life of both the blades and the engine, and sharpening three times through the growing season is ideal. Taking routine sharpening into account, a set of mower blades will last around 100-200 hours under normal operating conditions. With the purchase of high-quality John Deere blades, you can expect a lifespan of around 400 hours with proper care.

Lawn Mower Battery Lifespan

The average lifespan of a lead-acid lawn mower battery is around 3 to 4 years. A good practice to help increase the health and life of your lawn mower battery is to charge it a couple of times during the winter months when it is not being run regularly.

Lawn Mower Filters Lifespan

Most lawn mowers have two or three filters: an oil filter, fuel filter, and air filter. Filters are the part most often skipped in at-home maintenance. An easy rule is to replace them every time you change the oil. They are quick to swap, and you already have the mower opened up.

Lawn Mower Spark Plugs Lifespan

On average, spark plugs should be changed about every 100 hours. Old spark plugs are hard on the engine and can cause damage, so replacing them on schedule protects the overall performance of your mower.

Is it Worth Repairing a Lawn Mower?

Most lawn mower repairs are simple and inexpensive compared to replacing the mower. Small issues like batteries, spark plugs, or belts are almost always worth fixing. Larger issues such as engine or hydraulic trouble can get costly, and that is where the hour meter earns its keep. A lower-quality residential mower is expected to last around 450-500 hours and a John Deere residential mower around 1,000-1,500. The closer you are to the end of that range, the more a major repair tips toward replacing the mower. The further you are from it, the more sense the repair makes.

For an engine or hydraulic problem, call your nearest store rather than texting. A technician will have questions about the symptoms and the mower’s history, and that back-and-forth is faster by phone. They will give you an estimate you can weigh against the hours the mower has left. If replacing is the answer, a well-maintained used mower from a reputable brand can perform like new for far less than a new one.
