Calibrate Combine Yield Maps for Better Harvest Data

The yield map is only as good as your combine calibration

Data off an uncalibrated combine is worse than no data at all. It comes out of the monitor looking authoritative, gets loaded into John Deere Operations Center, and quietly skews every seed and fertility decision you build on it next spring. Before you trust a single acre, prove the machine is telling the truth.

Calibrate the mass-flow yield sensor with weigh-ticket comparisons at the start of each crop, and recalibrate after any major moisture swing. A calibration run tuned to high-moisture corn will drift once you're cutting dry-down grain, so run a multi-load calibration across a realistic range of flow rates rather than one pass at one speed. Set moisture calibration against a known, verified meter you trust, not the factory default. If your bench meter and the combine disagree, the combine is the one that's wrong until you prove otherwise.

Do the physical checks before the first pass, not after you've already logged garbage acres. Verify header height sensing is reading and reacting, and confirm the mass-flow sensor plate and vibration sensors are clean and free of buildup that dampens the signal. A few minutes at the field edge protects the whole season's dataset. Get the flow-delay and header settings right so the map matches the field

Calibration gets the yield number right; flow delay gets it in the right place. Grain moving from the header through the feederhouse, separator, and clean grain elevator takes several seconds to reach the mass flow sensor, so the yield you record lags the ground you actually cut. If that delay is set wrong, a high-yielding zone smears into the next one and your point rows read like the wrong hybrid failed. Set it once with a clean start-and-stop test into a known field boundary, then confirm the transitions on the map line up with where you entered and exited the crop.

Header and swath width matter just as much. Enter your true cutting width, and let the machine track partial swaths accurately when you're running point rows, waterways, and grassed strips. If the combine assumes full width on a half-width pass, it dilutes bushels across acres you never cut and pulls your zone averages down. On multi-combine, multi-operator harvests, log each operator and machine so the data reconciles cleanly in John Deere Operations Center later instead of blending two sensors' quirks into one muddy map.

Last, check your correction level. Pass-to-pass drift from a lower-accuracy signal will blur zone edges that a higher correction level holds sharp, and sharp edges are what make a prescription worth building next spring. Clean the data before you trust it in Operations Center

A raw yield map lies to you at the edges before it tells you anything useful. The predictable error lives in three places: headland turns where ground speed swings, the fill and end-of-pass points where grain flow doesn't match what the head is actually cutting, and any stretch where you sped up or slowed down hard. Those points read as false highs and lows, and if you leave them in, they drag your field averages and pull your zone boundaries in the wrong direction.

John Deere Operations Center runs automatic cleanup on the raw layer, and it catches most of it. Do not stop there. Pull up the map and review the edge points by hand, especially negative values and single-point spikes that survived the pass. Delete the obvious outliers rather than trusting a yield figure built on them. Ten minutes of manual review on a problem field is cheaper than a fertility prescription built on bad headland data.

Then make the years comparable. Normalize each corn and soybean layer to relative yield so the maps overlay in the same terms and the same weak zones show up across both crops. That only works if your documentation is clean, so name fields, hybrids, and seed varieties the same way every season. Consistent labels are what tie the map back to the decision it's supposed to inform.

 

 

Turn the map into next spring's seed and fertility decisions

One season of yield data tells you what the weather did more than what your ground can do. Before you build a single prescription, overlay two to three years of yield maps in John Deere Operations Center and look for zones that repeat. You are after three categories: stable high, stable low, and variable-response acres that swing with the year. Those repeating patterns, not last fall's rain-driven map, are what you write a prescription against.

A zone that comes in low three years running is telling you something a heavier seeding rate will not fix. Check drainage, compaction, and pH there before you spend a dollar on more seed or nitrogen. Pulling a grid or zone sample on those consistent low pockets usually pays for itself faster than chasing them with population. Once you know a low zone is genetic to the field rather than a management miss, you can cap inputs on it and move that budget to acres that respond.

Build variable-rate seeding and fertility off the zones that actually repeat, then push hybrid and variety selection into the same map.
